Prompt
Create and animate a personal mandala. The Mandala should represent me in someway by the use of shape, image, color and style of animation. The basic form of most mandalas is a square with four gates containing a circle with a center point. Each gate is in the general shape of a T. Mandalas often exhibit radial balance. Animations must demonstrate the Principles of Design and Animation.
Idea
I started this project off by finding music that fit the mood that I was trying to invoke. I went for a very loud, fast, and energetic sound that had strong beats that I can use to time my animations. Then in my sketches, I brainstromed words that described me and some objects that I considered including. Using the symmetry tools in Procreate, I made a main visual. I focused on making it simple, clean, and geometric. I wanted my animations to be fast, powerful, and carry a lot of inertia. I also wanted the visuals to move in a mechanical way, rotating quickly to each postion then holding.
What I learned
In this project I learned a lot about After Effects. I worked with After Effects for a few months during my first year of college, but here I finally began to understand how to use pre‐compositions properly, import AI files, and use more effects. This was also the first time I implemented a 3D camera in After Effects. Other than that, I also gained a greater understanding of how to add more energetic movements and give objects more momentum in animation.
